I participate in a recording forum – The Recording Journey – where we share ideas on songwriting, recording, mixing, production, mastering – basically everything involved in creating and recording music. We regularly do challenges to prod each other to be more productive. One of those is a “Cover This” challenge. The host for the challenge typically picks a theme and five songs that fit the concept. We vote to select one of the songs, then over the next month or so everyone comes up with their own interpretation of the song. The most recent song selection was “Glory Box” by Portishead, a song I was not familiar with and a trip hop genre I don’t regularly listen to. Didn’t really have time this month so crammed the process into two days. Recorded keys, bass, organ, guitars, vocal and drums. Everything was basically one take (except the drums, I still need a lot of work there.) For the video, since I didn’t shoot any while I was recording just used a bunch of stills of the instruments that were used in creation of the song and some shots from last May’s trip to Paris. It was a fun challenge. Hope you enjoy the result.
